How much electricity does a freeze dryer use per batch?

The figure that matters

Compare machines on kilowatt hours per batch, not on the wattage printed on the plate. A 900 watt machine does not draw 900 watts continuously; the compressor and heaters cycle.

Manufacturer specifications and owner metering for medium four tray units land between 7 and 11 kWh for a full cycle. Multiply by your own price per kWh to get a real cost.

Where the power goes

Two thirds or so goes to the compressor that freezes the trays and keeps the condenser cold. The rest is the shelf heaters and the vacuum pump.

That split explains why a warm room costs you money. The compressor works harder, so a garage in August draws more than a cool utility room in March.

Cutting it down

Pre-freeze the trays in a chest freezer. The machine skips most of the freezing stage, which shortens the cycle and cuts consumption.

Fill the trays properly. A half empty batch uses nearly the same power as a full one, so partial loads are the most expensive way to run the machine.

In context

A batch is comparable to running a tumble dryer for three or four cycles. It is a real cost but not an extreme one.

If electricity is expensive where you live, the case for a dehydrator over a freeze dryer gets stronger, since a dehydrator load uses a fraction of the energy.

Safety note. Follow the manufacturer's guidance on circuit rating and avoid extension leads. Freeze dryers draw a sustained load for well over a day per batch.
