How each one works
An oil sealed rotary vane pump uses oil to seal the vanes and carry away heat and moisture. That oil is why it reaches a deep vacuum cheaply, and also why it needs replacing.
An oil-free pump, usually a scroll or diaphragm design, seals mechanically. Nothing to top up, nothing to dispose of, and no risk of running the pump wet. It generally reaches a slightly less deep vacuum and costs more to buy.
Oil changes: interval and cost
Makers typically suggest changing oil every 20 to 25 batches, sooner if it has gone cloudy. A litre of vacuum pump oil is around €18, and a change takes ten minutes plus disposal.
Running dirty oil is the expensive mistake. It costs you vacuum performance, lengthens cycles, and shortens the pump's life.
Filtering and reusing oil
It can be done, and plenty of owners do it, but it removes particles rather than dissolved water. Filtered oil that still looks milky is still wet. Treat filtering as a way to stretch an interval, not to skip changes.
If you run a lot of high moisture loads, budget for fresh oil rather than filtering.

What actually fails on each
Oil pumps fail from running wet or low: worn vanes, then a pump that will not reach vacuum. Almost always a maintenance history problem rather than bad luck.
Oil-free pumps have fewer failure modes but less forgiving repairs. When a scroll pump's tip seals wear, it is a service kit or a new pump, not a bottle of oil.
Which to choose
Choose the oil pump if you are comfortable with a ten minute job every couple of months and want the deepest vacuum for the money. It is the cheaper five year option.
Choose oil-free if you would rather pay once than remember maintenance, if disposal is awkward where you live, or if the machine lives somewhere you would rather not handle oil, like a kitchen.
