Costs

How much does a freeze dryer cost to buy and run?

Small units start near €1,600, medium ones run €2,200 to €3,000, and large ones pass €4,000. Then add a pump, bags, absorbers and the electricity.

The purchase price

Manufacturer pricing for home machines falls into three brackets: small four tray units from about €1,600 to €2,200, medium units around €2,200 to €3,000, and large units from €3,500 upward.

Some machines include a vacuum pump in the price and some do not. An oil pump adds roughly €300 to €500, an oil free pump more.

What you buy after the machine

Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers are the running consumable, at a few cents per bag. Pump oil, if your pump uses it, is around €18 and gets changed every twenty batches or so.

A vacuum sealer for the bags is effectively required, not optional. Budget €60 to €150.

Electricity per batch

Manufacturer figures and owner metering put a home batch at roughly 7 to 11 kWh. At €0.25 per kWh that is about €1.75 to €2.75 of electricity per cycle.

Over a year of weekly batches, that is €90 to €140. Real usage is usually lower, because few households run one every week.

Whether it pays back

Against supermarket freeze-dried food, the machine can pay for itself in a few years if you use it regularly. Against a dehydrator, it never does, because it is doing a different job.

The honest way to judge it is not payback but capability: no dehydrator will give you shelf stable stew that comes back like fresh.
