Watts, hours and what the label means
The plate rating is what the machine draws with the element on full. Once it reaches temperature the element cycles and the average drops, often to half the rated figure or less. A 500 W machine over eight hours is not 4 kWh, it is closer to 2 to 3.
Work in kilowatt hours rather than money, then multiply by your own tariff. That is the only figure that transfers between countries.

Where these figures come from
They are calculated from manufacturer wattage ratings with a duty cycle of 60 to 80 percent, which is the range published owner metering reports tend to land in. They are not our own meter readings.
A plug-in energy meter costs under €20 and turns this into a fact for your machine, your kitchen and your load. If you take one reading, take it on a full batch of apples, because a full load runs the element harder than a half empty one.
Cost per kilo of dried fruit
Ten kilos of apples yields roughly 1.2 to 1.5 kg dried. On a mid sized machine that is two batches, so around €1.00 to €1.30 of electricity per kilo of dried apple, plus the apples.
Shop dried apple rings run €12 to €20 a kilo. Even paying supermarket prices for the fruit, home drying comes out ahead once you count the glut and windfall apples nobody sells you.
Cutting the cost
Fill every tray. The fan and element run whether the trays are full or not, so a half load costs nearly the same as a full one.
Cut thinner and even, so the batch finishes in eight hours instead of eleven. Start batches on an off-peak tariff if you have one, since most machines have a timer. And dry in a warm dry room, not a cold garage, because the machine has to heat the air it draws in.
Questions people ask
Is it cheaper overnight? Only if your tariff is cheaper overnight. The machine uses the same energy at any hour.
Does a bigger machine cost more? Per batch yes, per kilo of food usually no, because it dries far more in one run.
Cheaper than buying dried fruit? Yes for most fruit, especially if you have a tree or a market glut.
Safety note. Do not run a dehydrator through a thin extension lead or a daisy chain of adapters. Plug it into a wall socket.
