Single ingredient treats are simple to make and keep for a long time. The part most guides skip: freeze drying does not kill pathogens in raw meat.
What freeze drying does to bacteria
It removes water, which stops bacteria multiplying. It does not kill what is already there. Salmonella and Listeria survive freeze drying, which is why commercial raw pet food has been recalled for exactly this.
That does not mean you cannot make raw treats. It means you handle the raw meat as raw meat, keep it away from human food preparation, wash hands and surfaces afterwards, and think twice if anyone in the home is pregnant, elderly, very young or immune compromised.
Foods to keep out
| Avoid | Why |
|---|---|
| Grapes and raisins | Kidney failure in dogs |
| Onion, garlic, leek, chive | Damages red blood cells |
| Xylitol and sweetened products | Severe hypoglycaemia |
| Chocolate and cocoa | Theobromine toxicity |
| Macadamia nuts | Toxic to dogs |
| Cooked bones | Splinter risk |
| Avocado | Persin, plus the stone |
Single ingredient treats that work
Chicken breast strips, beef liver, beef heart, plain sardines, sweet potato slices, green beans, plain pumpkin, blueberries and plain natural yoghurt drops. Organ meats are the ones dogs react to most, and they dry cleanly.
Cut to a uniform thickness, around 5 to 10 mm for meat, so the batch finishes together. Liver dries faster than muscle meat, so give it its own tray.
Preparation and cycle
Pre-freeze the trays solid before the cycle. It shortens the run and keeps thin strips from curling. Do not stack pieces; they fuse and the centres stay wet.
Meat wants a longer cycle than fruit. Check a thick piece from the middle: it should snap, not bend, and feel room temperature rather than cool.
Storage
Sealed in mylar with an oxygen absorber, single ingredient lean treats keep for a very long time. Fatty cuts are the limit, because fat oxidises regardless of dryness, so use those within months.
Keep a jar of a week's worth in the kitchen and leave the rest sealed. Every time you open the main bag, the clock restarts.
When to buy instead
If your dog is on a prescription diet, if you cannot separate raw handling from your kitchen routine, or if you would be feeding raw treats to a puppy or an older dog, commercial products with documented pathogen testing are the safer route.
Cooking the meat before drying removes most of the concern and costs you very little in the finished treat.
Questions people ask
Does freeze drying kill bacteria? No. It stops growth, it does not sterilise.
Which foods are unsafe? Grapes, raisins, alliums, xylitol, chocolate, macadamia, cooked bones, avocado.
How long do they keep? Lean single ingredient treats, years when sealed properly. Fatty ones, months.
Safety note. Freeze drying does not kill Salmonella or Listeria. Handle raw meat as raw meat, sanitise trays and surfaces, and consider cooking the meat before drying if anyone in the household is at higher risk of infection.
