Where should you put a freeze dryer?

A utility room is the usual answer. The machine needs a room that stays roughly between 10 and 25 C, air around it, a socket of its own and a floor that will not carry vibration into the bedroom.

A utility room is the usual answer. The machine needs a room that stays roughly between 10 and 25 C, air around it, a socket of its own and a floor that will not carry vibration into the bedroom.

Ambient temperature decides performance

Manufacturers state a room temperature range, commonly around 10 to 25 C, and the reason is physics rather than caution. The compressor rejects heat into the room, so a hot room slows the freeze and lengthens the cycle. A cold room is not free either: condensation forms on the cabinet and the machine works against a swinging load.

In a garage that hits 35 C in August or drops below freezing in January, expect longer cycles and, over time, more pump and compressor wear.

Heat and moisture it puts into the room

Every gram of water it removes leaves the food and ends up either as ice in the chamber or as vapour in the room, and all the electricity it uses ends up as heat. In a small closed room you will notice both.

That is why a windowless cupboard is a poor choice. It does not need a ventilation duct, but it does need air movement and somewhere for the humidity to go.

Room by room

RoomVerdict
Utility or laundryBest. Drain nearby, tolerant floor, door you can shut
KitchenWorkable, but it occupies a lot of worktop for a day and a half
Garage, insulatedGood if it stays inside the stated temperature range
Garage, uninsulatedPoor in a hot or freezing climate
BasementGood on temperature, watch humidity and drainage
Shed or outbuildingOnly with a proper circuit and frost protection
Bedroom or loungeNo. Runs for 24 to 40 hours

Drainage and defrost water

At the end of a cycle the chamber holds ice, and it has to melt somewhere. A machine near a sink or floor drain saves you carrying a tray of water through the house. A towel under the door is the usual improvised answer, and it works until the day it does not.

Choose a spot where a litre of water on the floor would be an annoyance rather than a disaster.

Power and cable runs

Follow the manufacturer's circuit guidance and plug into a wall socket, not an extension reel. The machine draws a sustained load for well over a day, which is exactly the condition thin extension leads are worst at.

If the pump and cabinet plug in separately, keep both on the same circuit and keep the hose run short and gently curved.

Questions people ask

Can it run in an unheated garage? Only if the garage stays inside the stated range through the season you use it.

Does it need ventilation? Not a duct, but it needs air around it and a room that can shed heat and humidity.

How much heat does it add? Effectively all the electricity it draws, so plan for a noticeably warmer small room.

Safety note. Keep the stated clearances around the cabinet and follow the manufacturer's electrical guidance. Do not run a freeze dryer from an extension reel.
